ITER $23.7 Billion Project - Milestone

Nuclear fusion is capable of producing near about four million times more energy than chemical reactions such as burning coal, oil, or gas. Also, it is a well-known fact that controlled fusion is way more difficult than nuclear fission, but it might be achievable in the next 10 - 15 years and the most encouraging example related to this work is Tokamak a scientific instrument that produces energy from fusion and a large-scale version is currently being built in southern France as part of the ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) initiative. With more than 30 participating nations this largest magnetic fusion-based project recently got another milestone.

Larsen & Toubro received a contract in September 2012 from the Indian domestic agency for the manufacture of the ITER cryostat(1350 Crore) now after eight years India's engineering mammoth has finished their part. Due to the sheer size of the component, Larsen & Toubro had to plan for a "three-step, kit-like process". It is expected to produce 500 MW output from only 50 MW input power. Hopefully when the most ambitious energy project will be completed world will get its biggest man-made carbon-free single source of energy.
