Geneva & Headquarters

From the League of Nations to the World Sporting Bodies, Switzerland has been a preferred destination for the headquarters of non-governmental organizations and financial institutions over the last 200 years. But why do they choose Geneva?

Switzerland is the oldest permanently neutral state in the world. The country remained neutral through both world wars, a stance that attracted many organizations. In order to lure international organizations, Switzerland offers several preferential policies. UN officials, for example, are free from taxation and officials working for many other international organizations enjoy a tax abolition policy. This is why Geneva is often named the capital of peace, home to around 22 major organizations.
